In Arboretum Film Premiere 9th May

In Arboretum

Friday 9th May 2025. In Arboretum, Film Premiere at Open City Documentary Festival 2025, Rich Mix Cinema London

Through a programme of film screenings, workshops, panels, talks and an exhibition, the festival will showcase new non-fiction works from an international range of filmmakers and provide a space to discuss live questions in non-fiction storytelling. This will be complemented by curated retrospective programmes, with researched insights bringing key movements and practitioners into prominence and highlighting their ongoing legacy in the present day.

Talented, up and coming Canadian film maker Kate Colenbrander has her film In Arboretum showing at the Rich Mix cinema London next Friday 9th May. This is a free event but requires booking.

See the full festival line-up here.

In the film Kate explores aspects of human interaction with trees. As such, Kate visited Shropshire late last year to film myself at the Darwin Oak and she also filmed at Charles Darwin's birthplace, The Mount. In the film are also other tree campaigners across the UK, including the Happy Man Tree campaigners in London.

The film is featured on the Meaningoftrees podcast YouTube channel here.

As it stands, the UK has one of the highest proportions of ancient trees in Europe, yet they hold no inherent legal protections. In this collage of media, voice and personal stories (both human and wooded) documentarian Kate Colenbrander interrogates and expands on the question, 'what does it mean to kill a tree?' in her original documentary - In Arboretum (2024).
